WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is recognizing the contributions of historically black colleges and universities to the nation’s education system and calling for their continued support. Obama says strengthening the country’s 105 federally recognized historically black colleges and universities is a job for the entire federal government and key to his goal of increasing college graduation rates.

Obama will discuss how his “Race to the Top” program and other initiatives are driving education reform across the country and focusing the nation on the goal of preparing students for college and careers. AUSTIN, Texas – Discussions remained mild Thursday as the State Board of Education made final edits to new social studies guidelines for Texas schools. But debate over several controversial plans — including a proposal to tone down criticism of McCarthyism — was expected to heat up as the meeting stretched into the evening. The board’s decisions will set the standards for teaching history and social studies to some 4.8 million public school students for the next 10 years.
