Los Angeles – When Kelsey Hicks turned 18, she followed in the footsteps of her father before her and left the house to live on her own, despite still being a student at Del City High School, just outside of Oklahoma City. Hicks lives with her girlfriend and her girlfriend’s 2-year-old child, she told The Advocate Tuesday evening. PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Thousands of students in the nation’s sixth-largest school district spent hours locked in their classrooms Wednesday after an unidentified woman called a South Florida radio station and said her husband might go to a campus and open fire with a gun. The lockdown of all 300 Broward County schools was ordered after WFTL 850 AM employees found the station had earlier been sent an e-mail, perhaps by the husband, saying “something big was going to happen,” possibly at a post office or a school, said Pembroke Pines Police Capt.

NEW YORK – Shares of for-profit schools dove Thursday after a seemingly routine program review by the Department of Education reawakened fears of greater oversight — and lower profits — in the sector. Several analysts also sounded warnings, concerned about their ability to sign up new students and access government-backed financial aid due to increased scrutiny. Apollo Group Inc., which owns the University of Phoenix, the country’s largest for-profit higher education chain, said on Thursday that the DOE is launching a review of how Phoenix administers federal financial aid.
